Flu season is here, and while there’s not yet a vaccine for COVID-19, there is one for influenza that’s arriving in medical practices nationwide. Nationally, public health officials are urging people, especially seniors, to get a flu shot by the end of October.
Flu activity typically begins to increase in October and November and often peaks between December and February. Studies show that many people who aren’t interested in getting a flu shot have heard that they are not 100% effective and/or that they actually can cause people to get the flu. What they don’t realize, of course, is that flu vaccines cannot cause the flu. And even though flu shots have varying levels of effectiveness depending on the year, every year they reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalizations and deaths of both adults and children. Getting a flu shot isn’t just something you do only for yourself — you do it to protect other members of your household and vulnerable members of the community. Those are important messages for physicians to communicate to their patients, especially in a time of COVID-19.
Many people with chronic health conditions who are at high risk for the most severe complications of COVID-19 are also at risk of severe flu-related complications. With no vaccine yet approved for COVID-19, getting a flu shot can help reduce the likelihood of coming down with both viruses at once, or getting the flu first and then testing positive for COVID-19. It’s important to remind your patient base, especially seniors and the elderly, about the importance of flu shots.
