If you’re an optometrist, you probably advise patients about eye safety all year long. And while the summer months are full of fun, you’re also aware that they hold special risks for your eyes. Here’s how your patients can protect their vision before autumn hits!
UV exposure is more prevalent during this time of year, when folks spend more time outside. Fortunately, UV rays can be blocked with an umbrella, UV-blocking glasses, and broad-brimmed hats. Also, encourage patients never to look directly at the sun (though this is mostly an issue for small children)!
With all the outdoor activities to enjoy during the summer, it’s natural that patients get more bacteria on their hands. But that can lead to infections if patients touch an unsanitary surface, then touch their eyes. Encourage them to wash their hands frequently, or use sanitizing gel before putting their hands to their face.
As a medical professional, you also know that summer is an especially dangerous time for eyes. Feel free to share the above safety tips with your patients who may need a refresher course!
