There are more choices than ever when it comes to your health. While everyone should establish care with a primary care provider, some of your health concerns may require the help of a specialist. Here are just a few types of doctors that you may want to see.
Cardiologist
Get that heart checked out by a heart doc! A cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in treatment of the cardiovascular system. Cardiologists can treat heart and vascular diseases. You should consider seeing a cardiologist if you are experiencing shortness of breath, non-emergent chest pains, high blood pressure or changes in heart rhythm. Your cardiologist can order specialized tests and help make important decisions regarding treatment or surgery.
Neurologist
A neurologist is a physician who treats diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, which includes the brain and nerves throughout the body. A neurologist can treat conditions such as migraines, issues with movement or numbness of the extremities. Your neurologist can order an evaluation of your spinal fluid or a CT scan, which looks at the brain for any abnormalities.
Pulmonologist
Have concerns about your lungs? You may want to see a pulmonologist. A pulmonologist specializes in treating the lungs. See this doctor if you have any long term care challenges, such as asthma or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). A pulmonologist can also diagnose and help treat sleep apnea.
Most of the time, your primary care physician will make a referral if there are any concerns. But don’t be hesitant to ask for a referral to a specialist. Remember, it’s your health!
